Baccarat Games Online

Once seen mainly as a high-stakes casino pastime, baccarat is now played by people with a range of budgets. Its core rules are relatively easy to follow, though no strategy can guarantee a win or remove the uncertainty of each hand.

History

Baccarat is among the oldest casino games still played, with a history stretching back more than 500 years. Gambler Felix Falguiere is credited with creating it in Italy during the 1400s. The name comes from “baccara,” the Italian word for “zero,” reflecting the value assigned to tens and face cards. The French spelling became widely used later.

After reaching France, the game was called ‘Chemin de Fer’ or “Chemmy.” It became a favourite among noblemen, including King Charles VIII, and was especially popular with French aristocrats. Baccarat later travelled to the Caribbean and South America, where it was called Punto Banco.

Baccarat remained less widespread than slots or roulette, and casinos responded with high minimum wagers. That exclusivity helped raise its profile. Today, the game can be found in many land-based venues and online casinos.

Rules

Baccarat has three possible betting outcomes: Banker, Player, or Tie. The hand whose value is closest to 9 points wins, according to the game’s drawing rules.

Cards carry the following point values:

  • An Ace counts as 1 point
  • 10, Jack, Queen, and King each count as 0 points
  • 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 count at face value

After wagers are placed, the dealer gives each hand two cards. Add the card values to find the hand’s total. For instance, a 2 and a 5 make 7 points.

When the sum is above 10, only the last digit counts as the hand value. For example, 5 and 8 add to 13, so the hand is worth 3 points after the first digit is dropped.

A third card may be drawn depending on the totals. An initial two-card hand worth 8 or 9 points is called a “natural”; under the described rules, that hand wins automatically.

Payouts

The Banker wager is the most frequently chosen and is described as offering the strongest chance of winning. A Player wager pays 1:1. Banker wins usually incur a 5% house commission, called the vigorish. Tie bets commonly pay 8:1, although casino rules can differ.

The vigorish offsets the Banker wager’s advantage, leaving the house with an edge rather than giving players a greater than 50% chance.

Variations

Online casinos may offer several forms of baccarat. They share the same basic idea, but table setup and dealing procedures differ, so check the specific rules before wagering real money.

  • Mini Baccarat – This smaller table seats seven players, compared with the usual eight, and uses one croupier rather than the usual three. The croupier serves as banker and dealer. Its lower bet rates are a key reason for its popularity.
  • Chemin de Fer – The French form uses six decks, with the croupier as the only person who shuffles. Players take turns as banker, and cards are dealt face down rather than face up.
  • Puncto Bunco – This Cuban form allows up to 14 players, and its banker is called the Bunco. The croupier shuffles and deals; players do not choose whether a third card is drawn.

Winning

The straightforward rules do not make a run of wins easy to sustain. Baccarat outcomes depend on chance, as with most casino games. Some approaches can guide decisions, but they cannot ensure a positive result.

  • Skip the “Tie” wager. A Tie is described as unlikely, so the original advice favours choosing Banker instead.
  • Consider the pace of mini-baccarat. This version moves quickly. The source advises newcomers and people with limited gambling budgets to avoid it, noting that more than double the decisions can occur per hour compared with standard baccarat, potentially increasing losses.
  • Set a spending limit. Choose in advance how much you can afford to lose at the table, and stop if you reach that amount. The same limit matters even during a winning session.

High demand for baccarat tables at land-based casinos has sometimes led to higher minimum bets. Online tables may offer another way to join a game, but availability and terms vary. Familiarize yourself with the rules and decide on a firm budget before playing.
