Brand New Game of Thrones For 2020 Announced by Microgaming
Game of Thrones became a major draw in Microgaming’s online slot range as well as a hugely popular HBO series. At ICE London 2020, held from 4 to 6 February, Microgaming announced another journey to Westeros with its new Game of Thrones™ Power Stacks™ slot.
The announcement follows the original Game of Thrones video slot, which launched in 2014. It offered the same core gameplay in two formats: a 15-pay line edition and a 243-ways-to-win edition. Microgaming had anticipated strong interest and gave players a choice between the two approaches.
Both versions found success at Microgaming casinos. The forthcoming release was also covered in an official Microgaming Game of Thrones press release.
On 3 February 2020, the developer revealed its plans for a new take on the original slot’s violent, high-stakes world. Slingshot Studios, a development team that makes games exclusively for Microgaming, was set to create the title.
Securing the rights to make a Game of Thrones slot was among Microgaming’s notable moves of the decade. The property had drawn more than 19 million viewers across 8 series, helping explain why companies saw value in partnering with the franchise.
Public interest was matched by strong critical recognition. Game of Thrones received 59 wins from 160 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, a record that many television and film productions would struggle to match.
The series also earned a Golden Globe Award (GGA), placing it alongside The X-Files and The Sopranos in the GGA hall of fame. Microgaming had previously lost the chance to make Playtech versions of The X-Files and The Sopranos video slots. This time, however, Microgaming secured the Game of Thrones rights ahead of Playtech and established a strong relationship with HBO.
Jean-Luc Ferriere, Microgaming’s Chief Commercial Officer, said the company was pleased to extend its partnership with HBO. He said the team developing the new Game of Thrones slot would work to deliver a feature-rich experience with an authentic theme that reflected the HBO series.
The original review expressed confidence that Microgaming would deliver on those ambitions, based on the developer’s past work. It also looked forward to the slot’s arrival and said the review team would be among the first casino sites to play and assess it in the GCCans online slots review section.
